Lesson 6: Greetings 2

Greetings

Situation: Greeting (leaving and coming back)

子供: いってきます。
kodomo: ittekimasu.
お母さん: いってらっしゃい。
okaasan: itterasshai.

Kid: See you.
Mother: Take care.

Description

 いってきます ittekimasu.
literally means "I´m going and coming back". Indicated that someone will return to the same place and will probably meet the same person. So its often used at home, at the office or even going to the toilet (). "ittekuru" is the less formal version and can be used with friends.

いってらっしゃい itterasshai
means the same, but from the opposite side. So "go and come back". Used by the person staying behind. But don't use this when some leave for the toilet, only if you want to joke. As a tip only when someone leaves for a longer time, since the emotion of anticipation is included in this phrase.

Situation: Father comes home from work.

Greet someone at home in Japanese
父: ただいま。
Chichi: tadaima.
母: お帰かえりなさい。
Haha: okaerinasai.

Father: I'm Home.
Mother: Welcome home.

Description

ただいま tadaima
literally "just now", but here it means "i just got back" or "I'm home."

お帰りなさい okaerinasai
means "Welcome home" or "Welcome back" depending on where you are.
